Development of the Sony PS3's Media Drive - Control and Connectivity Systems For Use in the PS4

Sony PlayStation 3 out battles with rivals Microsoft's Xbox 360 games and Nintendo's Wii console supremacy. The PS3 has the most impressive specification of the three units, and includes an IBM-developed Cell processor, an advanced form of XDR main memory and an NVIDIA-based PC graphics processors. The replacement console should be released to the public in 2011, so when you get what you can expect the PlayStation 4 of the specifications that appear in comparison with the PS3 now? In two of my previous articles I looked PS4 probably the main processor, memory, graphics processor and hard drive specifications. In this respect, the last article of the series, we look at the optical drive media, control system and connectivity features.

First consider the console of the optical drive. Wait for the current generation of integrated Blu-ray optical drives to remain in force virtually unchanged from this specification. Just as the DVD format, which is, once an optical system has been established there is little need for change. Since the replacement of the Blu-ray is a long way in the future, and probably not based on hard, however, I see no reason why this element of the console to change. I think Sony will simply use the fact that Blu-ray is a proven technology as a cost advantage.

The high cost of development and the insistence that the company is included in the current console since its launch is an important factor in the high production costs and lack of benefit levels associated with the PS3. The remaining aspects of the PS3, in particular, the 2-port USB controller integrated Bluetooth, and built in wireless card you would expect to see returned to its place unchanged unless significant improvements for speed and technology. If this is the case then I expect an update to reflect this. One area of new development, I think we can do is to create a new controller design. The course director receives its share of criticism - The Xbox 360 controller is often considered as a unit much better use, while the new Nintendo Wii controller has been responsible for the sales success of systems. In light of this re-design the control system is almost a certainty, but with Bluetooth connectivity.

Sony has maintained until today (March 2009) loss of money for each PS3 sold, despite the relatively high price. This is the main cause of the advanced nature of their hardware, both in terms of development and production costs. I think the development of this technology in place is the only way to go and allow Sony to recoup some of their losses in the program for the PS3. This is especially important in today's fragile financial markets in which a record number of sales can not be guaranteed. This concludes our look at the PS4.

I would like to revisit this article in a few years to see how my predictions were accurate.
